Frequently asked questions

Why a Cat instead of a Rabbit?

The Vietnamese zodiac uses the Cat (Mèo) in the fourth position where the Chinese zodiac uses the Rabbit. It is one of the most distinctive features of the Vietnamese tradition and a great talking point when teaching the animals.

Are the flashcards free?

Yes. The flip-card flashcards on this page are completely free to use, with no sign-up required. Each card front shows the zodiac sign with its pronunciation, and flipping a card reveals the printed card back with the translation and the story behind the animal.

How do I hear the pronunciation?

Tap the speaker pill on the front of any card. Your browser reads the Vietnamese word aloud using built-in speech. If your browser or device does not support speech, the pill still shows the written pronunciation.

Are the videos available yet?

Full video lessons are on the way. In the meantime you can preview the lineup below and explore the existing Vietnamese Zodiac videos page.

What can I learn after the flashcards?

When you are ready for more, the Vietnamese Zodiac Mini Course and the SayViet game build on these animals with guided practice, audio, and play — perfect for families and classrooms.
